Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 11/08/2018

Receipts: 4,619 Last Week: 3,729 Year Ago: 5,969

Compared to last week: Yearling steers and heifers were too lightly
tested this sale to develop any market trend, however demand was mostly
good for all yearling offerings. Steer calves weighing 350-549 lbs sold
steady to 5.00 higher, 500-699 lbs steers sold steady to weak. Heifer
calves 350-549 lbs sold unevenly steady from 5.00 lower to 3.00 higher,
550-649 lbs sold weak to 5.00 lower. Demand for calves was mostly
moderate, however good demand was seen for high quality calves which
were fully preconditioned. Premiums were given for calves weaned over
45 days, with little to no premium given for short weaned calves. A few
load lot offerings were seen this week and buyers showed good demand for
one iron calves all off one ranch. Quality this sale was mostly attractive
overall and noticeably better than last week. CME contracts firmed
slightly today but remain lower than were they were this time last Thursday.
Lightweight calves suitable to develop into yearlings sold with the
best demand this week. Calves have lightened in flesh some as colder
weather and less grass have "greened up" calves. Calves offered mostly
light to moderate flesh this sale. Market activity this week was mostly
active, with many buyers on hand actively bidding on offerings. Weigh up
cows sold on mostly uneven demand this week. Packers and feeding buyers
were more particular as they bid on offerings this week. However, packers
were united in their view on slaughter cow demand; which was very light.
Slaughter cows were too lightly tested to develop an accurate market trend,
however lower undertones were noticed. Feeding buyers purchased some cows
with blemishes as packer demand was so light they allowed feeding cow buyers
to purchase these cows for feed instead of harvest. Feeding cows sold mostly
weak to 3.00 lower on all ages, however older cows sold with the lightest
demand. Slaughter bulls were too lightly tested to develop any market trend
as most of the bulls returned to the country to feed. Feeding bulls sold
generally steady compared to Mondays sale. Cow and bull quality was mostly
plain to average this week. Weigh up conditions were mostly average to below
average as many cows and bulls were pushing fill. The feeder cattle
offering was 66 percent steers and bulls 34 percent heifers with 41 percent
weighing over 600 lbs. Todays supply consisted of 86 percent feeder cattle,
2 percent slaughter cow, near 0 percent slaughter bulls, 11 percent feeding
cows and bulls and cows returning to the country, balance bred cows, heifers,
and pairs. Next sale will be Monday Nov. 12th, 2018.
